Major surgeons’ conference to inspire NHS consultants of the future, BAOMS President Stephen Dover says launching June 2017 Birmingham event
Launching the 2017 Annual Scientific conference programme Opportunities and Challenges, British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) President Stephen Dover said he wanted the event to: “Find new ways of raising the profile of OMFS (oral and maxillofacial surgery) with medical and dental students, and to inspire the consultants of the future to look at the full scope of our speciality when they consider their careers.
“Recruitment of trainees into all surgical specialities is a significant challenge today. We need to present OMFS as an attractive career option. How well we train the OMFS surgeons of the future will impact on our intention to provide the highest quality patient care, led and delivered by capable consultants. That’s why this year’s conference is the ideal place to discuss how best to optimise training, and to consider alternative approaches to allow us to shorten training without compromising the outcome.”
Stephen Dover said that holding the conference at the Birmingham ICC meant OMFS specialists from all four UK countries and internationally could be brought together to debate the key issues facing the specialty today, and learn about the latest cutting edge practice.
Over 400 delegates are already registered to attend the event to hear conference speakers from all over the world will present keynote lectures across the full breadth of the speciality including: facial deformity; trauma management; head and neck cancer; aesthetic and paediatric surgery; imaging techniques; medical modelling; and quality improvement.
The under-represented area of research in OMFS will be explored by Professor Richard Shaw, who will look at how to exploit opportunities for clinical research in today’s NHS. Sir Keith Porter, Professor of Clinical Traumatology at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, presents this year’s Norman Rowe Lecture. He will discuss how the care of people critically injured in armed conflict has influenced civilian healthcare practice.
“I hope this gives a flavour of what to expect from our Opportunities and Challenges conference, and that you will be suitably challenged and perhaps surprised by the opportunities we will present,” BAOMS President Stephen Dover concluded.
