Kathleen Fan is the 63rd President of the British Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). She is a Consultant at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London. In 2021, she was appointed as a Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King's College London.
Kathy Fan pursued her studies in dentistry and medicine at University of London. She earned a PhD from University College London in 1998, focusing on photodynamic therapy (PDT) in head and neck cancer. She leads the PDT service at King’s and teaches its application in managing skin cancer nationwide. She is also a council member of the British Medical Laser Association.
Her clinical expertise encompasses orthognathic surgery, skin cancer, minimally invasive salivary gland disorders, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, and facial trauma. Her research interests include the psychological impact of maxillofacial disorders, tissue engineering, and education. Kathy is the Co-Editor in Chief of the journal Cranio-Maxillofacial Trauma.
As a dedicated educator in medicine and dentistry, she has authored numerous books and serves as an examiner for the Joint Intercollegiate Exit Examinations (JCIE) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as exams for BDS, MBBS, MSc and PhD degrees. She is also a national and international faculty member for teaching facial trauma and orthognathic surgery.
Kathy has received numerous awards for her contributions to teaching, training, and supporting early researchers, including the BAOMS Surgery Prize in 2016. She is committed to the recruitment, mentoring, and support of clinicians pursuing a second clinical degree and a career in maxillofacial surgery. Elected to the BAOMS council in 2016, she later served as the Deputy Lead for the Consultant and Specialist Group in 2019. She is looking forward to serving as president of BAOMS.
