It is a great honour to have been elected President of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. I started professional life as a dental surgery assistant in Southall, West London, and decided to go on to study dentistry in Cardiff, where I was enthused by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Given the change in the timings of the Presidential handover this newsletter comes relatively hot on the heels of the last and so my introduction to its contents will be a brief one with the overriding aim of inviting those of you who have not registered to join us in London for this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting.

As many of you will be aware the Presidential handover has changed from the beginning of each new year to the Annual Scientific Meeting in the summer, and so I had the pleasure and honour to assume the badge of office at the Southbank Centre back in June 2022. Throughout my career I have worked for many past Presidents and so the enormity and responsibility of the occasion did not pass me by.

Welcome to the spring edition of our traditional Newsletter. As most will be aware there will be changes in the format of the Presidential term of office in line with approved recommendations of a new way of conducting the traditional handover. This means that future Presidents will be invested with regalia of office in the spotlight of the Annual Scientific Meeting and full view of the membership, rather than a private and previously low key ceremony in the winter Council meeting prior to Christmas.

It is fitting to pay tribute to the dignity and energetic action displayed by my predecessor Robert Bentley in an awful year when the world crashed in on our normal clinical services and we were all dislocated and redirected, some made inactive and some put into roles that were far from the comfort zone.

Due to the huge amount of work and sacrifices made by our predecessors, the specialty is hugely different to the one I started in.  The expansion of the specialty can easily be taken for granted but it is up to us to ensure that we not only continue expanding but also consolidate on what has previously been achieved. I find it hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2017 and I am

hosted the Past Presidents’ Lunch and we had the chance to talk with senior colleagues who held office between 1986 and 2011.
