A YouTube video on COVID-19 maxillofacial surgery and dentistry recently launched on the Sikh Channel aimed at empowering the Punjabi-speaking community with knowledge and an understanding of how to manage the coronavirus.
The hour-long video, hosted by Sardul Marwa MBE, was presented in Punjabi and English by British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) President Elect 2023 Daljit Dhariwal and OMFS trainee Sukhpreet Dubb, together with dental surgeon Dr Saranjit Sihra. They emphasised that medical care for urgent conditions such as strokes, heart attacks and cancers is still available. They also stressed that hospital OMFS units are open to treat people with severe dental infections associated with swollen faces.
Dr Saranjit Sihra pointed out that although dental surgeries were closed, they operated a phone triage service for patients who needed dental health advice. He added that urgent care was available from one of the 250 urgent dental care centres across the country. He also talked about the need for alternative PPE masks for men who don’t want to shave their beards for religious reasons.
Daljit Dhariwal underlined: “This is clearly a time of evolving knowledge and change. It is important that we keep up-to-date with guidance from our national associations and use that knowledge to empower our patients and team members to keep safe in the coming months.”
Consultant MaxilloFacial Surgeon and BAOMS Council Member Kathy Fan added: “It is important to engage with all communities, and particularly those that are at greater risk from COVID-19 to give them the information they need to manage the virus.”
