British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) President Elect Daljit Dhariwal will take part in an important webinar next week to discuss race inequality in dentistry and the first steps in what can be done about it.
The Faculty of Dental General Practice (FDGP, UK), together with the College of General Dentistry (CGD) and ProDental CPD are hosting Black lives matter - experiences from the dental profession from 7pm to 8.30pm on Tuesday 21 July.
“I think it is vital that we discuss the real-life experiences of race inequality in dentistry and start to bring the unconscious bias we all have to a conscious level, as a first step in dealing with inequity” Daljit Dhariwal explained, pointing to the work that BAOMS has done on inclusion, equity and diversity. “Our statement is very relevant, and coupled with the checklist for members on how to avoid unconscious bias, is the first step in taking action. Inclusion, equity and diversity are our strengths in our organisation, in our community and for the patients we serve.”
“Have a look at our gallery of diversity. It’s a fabulous picture of each BAOMS member’s uniqueness.”
The webinar will be chaired by FDGP (UK) Dean Ian Mills. Other panellists include: Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England, Jason Wong; FDGP (UK) Vice Dean, Onkar Dhanova; Clinical Leadership Manager, Office of the Chief Dental Officer for England, Nishma Sharma; FDGP (UK) Dental Student of the Year, Yewande Oduwole; General Dental Practitioners, Olumide Oio and Martin Wanendeva; Chair of the African and Caribbean Dental Association UK, Timi Adesanya.
