BAOMS ASM 2021 - OMFS learn how to do it!
26 August 2021 (Last updated: 26 Aug 2021 16:56)
British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) President Austen Smith is set to welcome BAOMS members to this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at Sheffield University’s Diamond Centre in October. The two-day ASM this year over the October 9 and 10 weekend will focus on “a pictorial and video-based showcase of surgical techniques”, as Austen Smith explains. “They should serve as a refresher following the hiatus in normal surgical practice in this last year.”
The BAOMS ASM this year has a limited number of on-site delegate places, complemented with some live streamed sessions. But, non-BAOMS members can now register to access the programme content, and if they want to attend on-site can follow this link to join BAOMS
There are no on-the-day registrations, so anyone who wants to register should pre-register before noon on Friday 24 September 2021 via the meeting platform. OMFS nurses who want to attend the Nurses’ Day sessions should contact the BAOMS office to pre-register. There will also be online access for other non-BAOMS members available on demand after the event. (See information on pre-registration below.)
This year’s event features overseas lecturers from South Africa, Sweden, Belgium and India, and a small delegation from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons plans to attend.
The innovative programme includes a day specifically for OMFS nurses, and separate sessions for maxillofacial prosthetists and technologists (IMPT – Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists).
Austen Smith adds: “I’d like to call on our members to talk to OMFS nursing colleagues working in theatres, clinics and wards to let them know there’s a dedicated programme this year – and we’d love to see them here in Sheffield.”
The Preliminary Programme kicks off with a Tech Day held at Sheffield’s Advanced Research Centre on Thursday 7 October: “I’m leading the day with my colleague Iain Varley, who specialises in head and neck tumour treatment. Among the days’ sessions, we’ll look at developments in technology and working with industry to accelerate product development.”
The Tech Day keynote lecture on point of care, planning and printing for reconstruction is led on live stream from Texas by Fayette Williams, from the Clinical Faculty at the John Peter Smith Hospital.
There are three workshop sessions on Friday morning 8 October at the Sheffield INOX Student Union centre, where the BAOMS Council meeting and AGM also take place. The members’ symposium Trouble shooting – how to manage osteocronosis is chaired by Douglas Hammond.
Highlights of the ASM two days of sessions include a focus on the basics with a series of how to guides from oncology and reconstruction, deformity and TMJ and aesthetics to cleft and craniofacial among the many presentations.
“We have an impressive list of speakers to complement the how to guide workshop manual approach to surgical technique that I hope you will find valuable,” Austen Smith says. “The sessions will be live-streamed where possible so more members are able to participate.
“And I’d like to encourage all members, and particularly junior trainees, to submit abstracts for podium presentation on the subject of A better way to…. There are limited spaces for the podium presentations so put your thinking caps on, I want to hear from you! They’ll be scored and entered into the BAOMS members' Prizes for 2021.”
The Scientific Programme Committee, which President Austen Smith chairs, will assess and rank all eligible abstracts, and confirm which have been accepted for the three-to-five-minute presentation at the Sheffield ASM on Sunday 10 October 2021.
“Don’t forget to enter this year’s ASM artistic challenge - a poetry competition. Prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner at the Cutlers’ Hall on Saturday 9 October and will be a key feature throughout the ASM. So, put pen to paper and delight us with your compositions!”
The theme for the poetry competition is Fixing Your Face and entrants can compose a traditional style poem or a humorous limerick. There’s a 400-word limit that must be submitted by 30 September 2021. To enter, email your entry to the office.
“I’m really looking forward to welcoming you to Sheffield. I think we’ve put together an exciting programme that you’ll enjoy and learn from. And, don’t forget that we have the Grimethorpe Colliery Band playing for us - not to be missed!”
