BAOMS agrees three-year free ASiT membership pilot for all members

The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) has just signed an agreement with the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) to give all its trainee and consultant members, including trainers, free ASiT membership from January 2018 for a three-year pilot.
Announcing the news, BAOMS Chair Patrick Magennis, said: “This is an important formal link between a specialty association and the largest society for surgical trainees, and I believe it will benefit both organisations. Young doctors and dentists aiming for a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) spend a long time in training, so ASiT membership will link them to the family of surgical trainees.
“ASiT’s Cost of Surgical Training survey confirmed oral and maxillofacial surgery is the most expensive of the 10 surgical specialities for trainees because they must complete both a dental and medical degree, self-funding their second degree,” the BAOMS Chair explained.
Helen Mohan, ASiT President, said: “ASiT is keen to work together with trainees of all specialties to improve surgical training. We are delighted with this opportunity to work closely with BAOMS and provide opportunities to OMFS trainees. This is particularly relevant given the high costs of surgical training, as we highlighted in our recent Cost of Surgical Training survey. The theme for our 2018 conference is Nurturing Excellence and the agreement fits very well with this concept. We are keen to hear from OMFS trainees on what issues that they feel are relevant and would like us to highlight.”
BAOMS trainee representative, Nabeela Ahmed, said “This is a brilliant collaboration. As one of the smaller specialities it will encourage our interaction with other surgical colleagues and allow them to see the diversity of work that we are involved in. It will also ensure trainees in OMFS are well represented within ASiT and the wider surgical community.”
