Congratulations to Austen T Smith, who has been elected BAOMS President for 2021. Austen is a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS) at Sheffield and Barnsley Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Austen’s clinical work focuses primarily on head and neck oncology, reconstructive, maxillofacial trauma, laser and dentoalveolar surgery. This is complemented by a wide range of specialty interests that include teaching and training and recruiting the next generation of surgeons.
He has been Honorary Treasurer for BAOMS for three years, and is currently Honorary Secretary. Austen has served the specialty and BAOMS in many other roles, including the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in OMFS.
Commenting on his election, Austen said: "A specialty association like BAOMS looks after the interests of colleagues in the busy and chaotic world of medicine and medical politics. For OMFS to thrive it needs engaged and motivated individuals to push for change and to safeguard our professional practice.
“I’m looking forward to this next opportunity to do my bit for the best specialty in surgery And, I'm going to call on younger colleagues and members countrywide to get involved and bring their talents and energy to bear and maintain the momentum that past and present Officers have generated!"
