Quality Outcomes in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: 2018 President’s initiative

Ian Martin, the 2018 British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOMS) President, has this year initiated a quality outcomes project for the specialty.
As Jeremy McMahon (left) explained, launching the Quality Outcomes in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (QOMS) project: “There are powerful external imperatives. Although the recent uplift in NHS funding is welcome, it is not enough. So, we need to collect quality outcomes in oral and maxillofacial surgery to ensure funding for OMFS continues.”
He and Project Manager Fabien Puglia have six months to deliver the QOMS project “and to make this happen we need your engagement”, he said.
“We are constantly asked to improve our roles, but what are the best possible results? But, this begs the question ‘what are the best care practices?’,” Jeremy McMahon asked delegates to this year’s scientific meeting in Durham.
QOMS Project Manager Fabien Puglia (right) gave more detail on how the project would be set up: “What are we going to do? We are going to engage with you and different stakeholders and implement and disseminate our findings. But, we need to hear about your best practice.”
He said that every sub-specialty should be measureable and “what we need from the project is to improve patient care and report it back to you to disseminate. We’ll also be using the BAOMS website and making site visits”.
A consultation process starts in July, and Fabien and Jeremy have put a call out to all BAOMS members to get involved. The plan is to go live with the project later in the year.
“Come and visit us on the stand, or email us with any questions,” Fabien Puglia said.
