New digital resource designed for trainees

Winner of a BAOMS 2017/18 Bursary Award Kohmal Solanki, together with co-author and anaesthetic trainee Dr Tim Knowles under the supervision of consultant OMFS surgeon Jag Dhanda, have used the award to develop a new online resource for trainees.
Speaking at the BAOMS Annual Scientific Meeting in Durham, King’s College Hospital-based (KCH) Kohmal Solanki explained: “Using evidence-based medicine is essential, but there are very few resources that summarise head and neck cancer surgical outcomes. It’s bewildering for trainees. So we aimed to create the first trainee-friendly website with surgical outcomes data.”
The team reviewed existing guidelines and electronic data from the last 10 years. As a result they have created headandnecktrials.com. The online resource is up and running with some further tweaks to make it fully operational. The plan is to update the electronic data on a six-monthly basis, and upload new guidelines as soon as they published.
Kohmal says that the website is “a user-friendly, comprehensive digital resource summarising landmark surgical outcomes studies”. The KCH trainees hope the resource will benefit OMFS trainees by enhancing their understanding behind clinical decision-making.
“In the future, this resource will be extended to app-format and also include other head and neck cancers including skin, nasopharyngeal, salivary gland, thyroid, skull base and unknown primary origin tumours,” Kohmal concluded.
