Royal Surrey Hospital-based maxillofacial consultant Carrie Newlands is the first woman to chair the Intercollegiate Examination Board. She has been joined on the board by colleague Daljit Dhariwal, consultant maxillofacial surgeon at the John Radcliffe in Oxford.
Talking about the number of women who progress into the OMFS specialty she commented that “we need to get different people in”.
Taking a leading role at this year’s BAOMS and AAOMS conference in Birmingham, Carrie Newlands pointed to the many women taking part at the conference “but many are juniors, in staff grades, few are yet in leadership roles”. She believes that this will change, and is already changing: “Many of the surgeons of the future will be women.”
One of the first things that Carrie Newlands has done in her new role is to look at the under representation of women who want to be examiners. The results of the survey she is conducting will be published in the autumn. She has also initiated a reporting mechanism for BAOMS to indicate how many more women have been recruited.
